Tile Hole Saw Slipping? How to Start and Keep Position
Before a stable groove forms, smooth glaze, poor control or vertical pressure can send the rim sideways.
Stop when the rim moves
Release the trigger if the tool leaves the mark, bounces or scratches an irregular path. Let it stop completely before checking; pulling a spinning rim back to center enlarges damage.
Check the likely causes
Smooth glaze, no guide, unstable hand position, poor initial contact, wobble or hammer mode can all cause skating. Disable hammer action and inspect the arbor and rim for runout.
Use a guide or template
Secure a suction guide on a clean smooth surface and verify size and center. On texture, use a clamped template that cannot move or interfere with the rotating tool.
Use an angle start carefully
Only when the manufacturer permits it, touch one side lightly to create a shallow crescent, then bring the tool upright slowly. Keep both hands stable and prevent bouncing across the glaze.
Decide whether the tile is recoverable
A slight error hidden by the finished cover may be corrected with a fixed guide. If the mark is visible, beyond tolerance or close to an edge, replace the tile rather than repeatedly grinding the hole.
