Why Tile Holes Chip: Prevent Entry and Exit Damage
Entry chips usually point to skating or wobble; exit blowout more often comes from poor backing and excessive breakthrough pressure.
Separate entry and exit damage
Irregular chips at the face suggest skating, wobble or a poor start. A large breakout on the back points to weak support or excessive pressure near breakthrough. Severe damage on both faces may indicate wear or mismatch.
Correct entry chipping
Stabilize the guide, inspect the rim for wobble and use light, even feed. Establish a controlled starting groove and never use hammer mode on tile.
Correct exit chipping
Support the tile continuously and keep the hole away from an unsupported edge. As the remaining material becomes thin, reduce feed pressure and steady the machine instead of punching through.
Finish from both faces when possible
For an uninstalled tile accessible from both sides, establish the center and most of the depth from the face, then align carefully from the back to finish. Misaligned centers create a step or oversized hole.
Control heat, debris and wear
Follow the product’s water or intermittent-cooling instructions and withdraw to clear debris. Stop for blackening, missing diamond layer or obvious runout. Small hidden chips may be eased; visible cracks or compromised sealing usually require replacement.
This is general educational guidance. Conditions, product specifications and local rules vary; inspect the work and equipment and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
