How to Install, Estimate and Remove Tile Leveling Clips

A leveling system controls adjacent tile lippage while mortar cures; it does not flatten a poor substrate or replace coverage.

01

Confirm clip specification

Match clip joint width and tile-thickness range to the design. Check that clips, wedges or caps belong to the same system; deal with severe tile warpage through layout and substrate work, not excessive tension.

02

Place clips

Position clips consistently along each edge and add intermediate points on long tiles. Keep them away from fragile corners. Quantity depends on edge length, warpage and site flatness, not floor area alone.

03

Install and tension

Comb mortar, bed the first tile and insert clips, then place and bed the adjacent tile. Increase tension gradually while checking the joint and straightedge, and stop as soon as lippage is removed.

04

Estimate quantity

Count shared tile edges from the layout and multiply by the chosen points per edge, then allow for waste. Test a small area before finalizing the clip density for the whole project.

05

Remove in the correct direction

Wait for the mortar cure specified by its manufacturer. Kick or tap parallel to the grout joint rather than diagonally toward the tile face, then inspect and clean any remnants before grouting.
