How to Choose a Notched Trowel for Tile

A trowel should place a controlled mortar volume that can collapse and vent, not simply create the thickest possible bed.

A size chart is only a starting point

Tile size, back pattern, warpage, substrate flatness, mortar and trowel angle all affect mortar volume. Confirm the final choice by setting and lifting a sample tile.

Square-notch trowels

Square teeth form regular, relatively full ridges and suit many medium and large tiles. Tooth width, depth and spacing all matter, so equal labels do not always create equal mortar volume.

U-notch trowels

Rounded ridges can deform and merge readily under movement. They are often chosen where more mortar is needed, but still require straight combing and proper bedding.

V-notch trowels

V-notches generally deliver less mortar and are common for small tile and some wall applications. They may be insufficient for deep-backed or larger tile.

Slant and specialty notches

Slant, Euro and curved profiles are intended to improve ridge collapse. Compare complete geometry and manufacturer guidance rather than relying on the marketing name.

Imperial and metric labels

US tools often list inch dimensions such as 1/4 × 1/4 in or 1/2 × 1/2 in, while other markets use millimeters. Conversion does not describe tooth spacing or profile.

Angle changes mortar volume

A low angle creates shorter ridges and a steeper angle increases them. Hold angle, pressure and direction consistently, and replace teeth that are rounded, bent or worn.

Verify by lifting a tile

Key in mortar, comb straight ridges, move the tile across them and lift it. Check transfer, collapsed ridges and edge coverage before changing notch size.
