How to Choose and Use a Manual Tile Cutter
A manual cutter scores a controlled flaw and snaps the tile along it; enough machine length does not guarantee every tile will break cleanly.
Know where score-and-snap works
A scoring wheel creates a controlled surface flaw and the breaker propagates it through the tile. Regular ceramic and some porcelain are suitable; stone, glass, heavy texture, very thick tile and stressed pieces require a maker-approved method and a test cut.
Size for the longest real cut
Use tile length for straight cuts and the actual diagonal for diagonal cuts, with room for positioning and breaking. A tile that only just fits may lack support at the rail ends.
Inspect rails, bed and carriage
Rails should remain rigid and parallel, the carriage should move without side play, and the bed should support both sides symmetrically. Bent rails, loose bearings and a drifting fence separate the score from the intended break.
Choose and inspect the wheel
Use the wheel geometry specified for the machine and tile. It should rotate freely with a sharp, undamaged edge; a worn wheel demands excess pressure and leaves an interrupted or crushed score.
Score once and break evenly
Align the mark, then make one continuous pass at steady speed and moderate pressure. Re-scoring creates competing cracks. Place the breaker where specified and increase force smoothly with even support.
Know when to switch to a saw
Narrow strips, holes, shapes, strongly textured tile and unsupported diagonal work may not snap predictably. Use a wet saw or suitable diamond blade rather than forcing the breaker.
Maintain and retire the cutter
Clear fragments from rails and pads, service moving parts as directed and replace worn wheels. Stop using a cutter with permanently bent rails, a cracked base, failed lock or misaligned breaker.
